ProPetapa: a drinking water project in Guatemala City

ProPetapa, a joint venture project with Dutch Clean Tech, focuses on supplying clean drinking water under long-term contracts to EMPAGUA, the municipal water company of Guatemala City, and to other large industrial customers. In addition, the company supplies unchlorinated water to industrial companies that mix concrete and cement.

The company is investing in large, deep water wells in an area of Guatemala City known for its extensive underground water reserves. It is also working on building a fleet of high-quality water tankers to deliver certified pure water to shopping centres, apartment complexes and other private customers.

The facilities are located within the grounds of our sister company, the Centra Petapa Industrial Park. Rainwater infiltration wells have been installed here to support the partners' green vision and to let rainwater flow back into the underground water reservoir.

Together with Dutch Clean Tech, the group is investigating large-scale projects for the treatment of wastewater from densely populated municipalities before this water reaches Lake Amatitlán, the main freshwater reservoir of Guatemala City.

The vision is then to extract water from the lake, treat it and make it drinkable, and then sell it back to the same water companies. The revenue from the sale of the water should cover the costs of the water treatment plants on a profitable basis.

Following the same business model, several smaller projects are being considered to supply the communities around the lake with clean water while preventing their untreated wastewater from ending up in the lake.
