According to Sander Pielkenrood, CEO and founder of Dutch Clean Tech, <em>\u201cWe don\u2019t lack water. We realised we had to rethink ownership. That\u2019s how Dutch Clean Tech was born: not selling machines but selling access to clean water.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>That shift turned the company from a traditional engineering firm into a platform business. Dutch Clean Tech installs and operates purification systems itself, taking on responsibility for maintenance and operations. Local governments and industries pay for clean water, while European investors finance the infrastructure and receive a steady return of around nine percent.<\/p><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s the economy-sharing model applied to water,\u201d<\/em> says Pielkenrood. <em>\u201cThink of it as solar leasing, but for one of the world\u2019s most essential resources.\u201d<\/em> The result is a model that combines stable cashflows with measurable environmental and social impact \u2013 a rare proposition in the world of cleantech.<\/p><p><strong>Traction in Latin America and the Middle East<\/strong><br \/>The model is already in motion across multiple regions. In Mexico, Dutch Clean Tech is tackling the massive influx of sargassum seaweed, an ecological disaster for Caribbean beaches and local tourism. <em>\u201cWe\u2019ve developed systems that collect sargassum at sea and convert it into energy through biogas installations, while at the same time replacing outdated sewage plants with modern purification systems,\u201d<\/em> explains Pielkenrood. <em>\u201cIt turns a crisis into an opportunity for the circular economy.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>In Guatemala, the company is rolling out purification plants in the Pet\u00e9n region, home to millions of people who rely on fragile water infrastructure. And in Oman, Dutch Clean Tech is delivering large-scale industrial wastewater treatment solutions. <em>\u201cThese are not pilots,\u201d<\/em> says Pielkenrood firmly. <em>\u201cThey\u2019re revenue-generating projects with real environmental and social impact.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>To accelerate further, Dutch Clean Tech is setting up a Luxembourg-based fund structure that will make it easier for both institutional and retail investors across Europe to participate. <em>\u201cImpact investing has matured,\u201d<\/em> Pielkenrood explains. <em>\u201cInvestors want strong governance and predictable cashflows. Luxembourg gives us the right vehicle to deliver both.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p><strong>Scaling impact through system change<\/strong><br \/>With climate tech funding booming, Dutch Clean Tech faces the question of differentiation. For Pielkenrood, the answer lies in the combination of legacy and innovation. <em>\u201cMany startups promise impact but lack proven business models,\u201d<\/em> he says. <em>\u201cWe combine decades of engineering know-how with a financing framework that generates monthly cashflows. That\u2019s what convinces investors: we\u2019re not just a vision, we\u2019re execution.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Looking ahead, Dutch Clean Tech\u2019s ambition is clear: replication at scale. <em>\u201cOver the next five years we want to run hundreds of installations worldwide,\u201d<\/em> says Pielkenrood. <em>\u201cClean water shouldn\u2019t depend on charity or subsidies. By making it investable, we can finally deliver impact at scale.
